South Africa’s deteriorating road infrastructure is crawling with dangers.
Dodging the ever increasing number of potholes on our roads can sometimes feel like a session of Mario Cart.
In all seriousness, though, in Johannesburg alone, an average of 1000 potholes are reported to road authorities EACH WEEK! Sjo!
The City Cape Town, on the other hand, has reported to spend more than R110 million per year, with a target of repairing 250 potholes a week.
What causes potholes?
Extreme fluctuations in weather conditions, poor maintenance and high volumes of load-bearing traffic are all contributors.
High temperatures cause cracks in the tar, which then widen. Rain seeps in, causing collapse of the layers beneath. If not attended to, the hole gets bigger and bigger… and bigger.
The biggest issue is lack of proper drainage. The road should be sloped in such a way that water can not collect beneath the tar.
The result
According to this report, 60% of vehicles taken to a tyre centre in Gauteng, were damaged as a result of potholes. Needless to say, tyre and rim damage caused by potholes is a serious problem in our country.
