We get asked this question A-LOT!
Every car owner will need to make the decision to sell and upgrade at some point… But when is the best time to make the move and sell your rattletrap? What are the factors that one would need to consider?
I’m here to give you the low-down on everything you need to know in order to spot your golden window of opportunity to trade in your hunk o’ junk for a brand-new whip.
The no-brainer basics
If you’re starting to feel UNSAFE in your car, or it’s costing you more in repairs and maintenance to keep your vehicle on the road than what it’s worth… The time has come, my friend.
The spring and summer effect
Did you know that it may be important to consider the month in which you choose to put your car on the market?
There’s a phenomenon called “The spring and summer effect”. Prices go up in spring and summer (August through March) but take a dip during the festive season when people are spending their dough on holidays at the coast and Christmas gifts.
Research shows that the best time to sell your used car is either August to October, or January to March.
When NOT to sell your car
The first 9 months of ownership.
This is going to be bad for your pocket in the long run, as during this period, your car is going to depreciate the most in value and you’ll no doubt sit with a low trade-in offer.
Next up – mileage!
It’s simple – the less kilometres on your car, the higher the value (duh).
What’s the sweet spot? You’re aiming for between 50 000 kms – 160 000 kms. Once you pass that 160 000 km mark, your value is unfortunately going to drop significantly – even if your car is running perfectly.
Overall condition
It goes without say that a vehicle in good condition (interior and exterior) has the highest value attached to it. So, best sell it before it gets to the stage where you’ll have to put in the work to fix it up
