With school holidays beginning tomorrow (15th December) and holidaymakers criss-crossing the country to the coast for the festive season, traffic on SA’s major routes is going to increase significantly.
South Africa’s roads are already among the most dangerous in the world, but for those who aren’t aware, travelling during the festive season has proven to be a particularly deadly exercise in our country.
690 people tragically lost their lives on the road from 1 December to 20 December in 2020. That’s 34 road deaths a day.
Every life lost on our roads is a tragedy and many crashes are preventable.
Routes To Watch Out For
Are you driving on any of the routes below RoadSaver? Please take extra caution as they’ve proven to be the most dangerous:
- N1 from Polokwane to Cape Town through Gauteng and Bloemfontein
- N2 along the Indian Ocean coastline
- N3 from Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal
- N4 through Mpumalanga
- N7 from Cape Town through to the Namibian border
The Golden Rule
I’m going to give you the single most valuable piece of advice to keep you and your family safe on the road…
Give yourself MORE TIME ❗️
This is not the time to see how fast you can arrive at your destination.
Take it slow and make the journey part of the holiday.
Stop at a couple of spots along the way – my personal favourite is stopping for a Riviersonderend’s Ou Muel pie
Sjoh! Now THAT is worth writing home about! 😱
Stay safe and healthy, folks.
